Queen of Debt
Did the French Queen,Marie Antoinette, really ever actually utter the phrase "Let them eat cake"?Supposedly, she spoke these words upon hearing how the peasantry had no bread to eat and then led up to the French Revolution. However,"let them eat brioche" isnot quite as cold a sentiment as I imagined.Information shows at that time,French law required bakers to sell fancy breads at the same low price as the plain breads if they ran out of the latter. The goal was to prevent bakers from making very little cheap bread and then profiting off the fancy, expensive bread. But I am still quite confused.Didnot they make bread at home by themselves? If there wasnot enough plain bread to go around, how could the poor eat the fancy ones since the prices were the same?I cannot believe they preferred the tasteless food.
